Former Harrington Park Butcher Swaps Knives For Lathe HARRINGTON PARK, N.J. — In his third career as a woodturner, Steve Bistritz of Harrington Park is happy as can be. He loves that his driveway is filled with wood. It brings him joy to see 50 more pieces of wood drying in his basement – and 50 beyond that completely dried and ready for his lathe. “I only use wood that is already down on the street or at the end of the woods,” Bistritz said. “If I’m riding with my wife,” he added, “and I see some oak from a tree someone took down, I’ll stop and throw a few pieces in the car.” Sure, Bistritz enjoyed running his own butcher shop – Olde Tyme…

Northern Highlands Friends Glamify Cancer Survivors ALLENDALE, N.J. — When breast cancer patient Bernadette Vargas of Fair Lawn trudged to the Allendale photo studio of Michele Bonacorte in July, she felt anything but glamorous. She knew why she was going to Beautiful Self, a nonprofit that starts helping breast cancer patients when their treatments stop. She would have “photo therapy.” Chemo, surgery, radiation – and a host of side effects – had not left her feeling good about her body. Bonacarte, a former Calvin Klein lingerie model and current fashion photographer, would help her confident, beautiful self emerge again. She’d do it wit…

Scouts Deck Out New Milford Bridge Honoring Soldier Killed In Vietnam NEW MILFORD, N.J. — The Girl Scouts of New Milford – all 200 of them – faithfully renew the decorations on the Merschrod Memorial Bridge on Main Street. The bridge was dedicated to Pfc. Lawrence Merschrod, who was killed in action at Dinh-Tuong, Vietnam, on Sept. 27, 1968. He was 20. For summer, the bridge fencing features patriotic banners and, as usual, items symbolic of the season or holiday at hand. Now there are flip flops and sand buckets amid the American flags and “USA” signs. “Ten years ago, the Girl Scouts of New Milford ‘adopted’ to honor Larry Merschrod,” said Donna Colucci, …

Midland Park Mom Needs Help For Wheelchair-Bound Son MIDLAND PARK, N.J. — Five weeks ago, the right wheel fell off the motorized wheelchair of 15-year-old Taylor Deyoung, sparking a crisis or two. For starters, the repair cost $2,000 – an impossible sum for his single mom, who found a place to fix it on a payment plan. Taylor, a Midland Park High School student, has cerebral palsy. He depends on his refurbished Jazzy 600ES wheelchair for his independence. Completely. He was delighted when it was donated to him and devastated last year when the two motors needed to be replaced at a cost of $2,650. Recently, his mom Melissa shelled out $400…

Mahwah Ponies Hold Healing Power For Ill Children MAHWAH, N.J. — In the main barn at Pony Power Therapies in Mahwah on Thursday a little girl stood aside a caramel-colored horse, eying him cautiously. “Stop moving,” Giuliana said to the horse. “I’m trying to brush you.” The horse turned his head and looked serenely at her. She peacefully resumed. The 16-year-old nonprofit, which provides therapeutic riding and other horse-assisted activities for at-risk people, hosted pediatric cancer patients from Hackensack University Medical Center as well as their parents and siblings. The four-day camp, which ended Thursday, was the second of two su…
