Westwood School Super Torpedoes 10th Kindergarten Westwood School Super Torpedoes 10th Kindergarten
Westwood School Super Torpedoes 10th Kindergarten WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Parents in the Westwood Regional School District who want a 10th kindergarten class walked away from Thursday’s Board of Education meeting disappointed. Instead, Schools Supt. Raymond Gonzalez recommended that each of the existing nine kindergartens in four schools add an aide. “We can reallocate $300,000 to accommodate the salaries for this,” he said. Space is the issue, according to Gonzalez. Not money. As enrollment now stands for the fall, each of the kindergartens at the Berkeley, Brookside, George, and Washington elementary schools has 23 to 25 students.…

Wyckoff Psychologist Shares ‘Secrets From The Sofa’ WYCKOFF, N.J. — Ken Herman of Wyckoff, an 89-year-old clinical psychologist, spoke to a packed auditorium at the Ridgewood library Tuesday on “How to Live a Meaningful Life.” “A lot of people are looking to cope more effectively, deal with obesity, deal with parenting, deal with anxiety and depression,” said Herman. “They want answers,” he added. “They want a meaningful life.” At this point in his career, Herman has become a sagelike figure to whom people turn. They always have. For 50 years, Herman, who holds a doctorate from Columbia University, treated patients at his Teaneck office, …

Hackensack Church Hosts Vigil For 'Nation On The Edge' HACKENSACK, N.J. - Pastor Gregory Jackson is hosting a vigil around the theme of senseless violence and death 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at his Mount Olive Baptist Church. The gathering is called "A Time Of Prayer and Reflection for a Nation on the Edge." The deaths of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and the five police officers in Dallas prompted Jackson to invite rabbis, imams, pastors, police officials, and community leaders to the event. “I just feel our nation is on the edge,” said Jackson. “What happened in Texas, Florida, Louisiana, and Minnesota could easily happen here. “Pe…

The remaining dogs at the Kinderkamack Road shop will go to LoSacco's East Hanover store or a local rescue, he said Wednesday afternoon. There are dancing lady orchids and butterfly orchids.” There also are the popular Phalaenopsis orchids, originally from Taiwan -- and Lady’s slippers from California, Cattleya and Grammatophyllum from Hawaii. Miltonia, too, from South America, and ma…
Ridgewood Language Teacher No Longer Lost In Translation Ridgewood Language Teacher No Longer Lost In Translation
Ridgewood Language Teacher No Longer Lost In Translation RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — Inlingua School of Languages has been a fixture in downtown Ridgewood for 30 years, but it’s sure been changing with the times. The school, whose home office is in Switzerland, offers language training as well as translating and interpreting services, according to Sandra Stern of Mahwah, its coordinator of translation services. When Stern started working there as an English teacher 14 years ago, almost 90 percent of the translations were from a foreign language into English. “In the last eight or nine years, it’s going the other way,” Stern said. “That’s good news because…

Old Tappan, Park Ridge Welcome Army Veteran Cross-Country Cyclist OLD TAPPAN, N.J. — Old Tappan and Park Ridge made sure there was a sweet finish for U.S. Army veteran Devin Faulkner of California, who completed a grueling cross-country bicycle ride this week. Faulkner, who served in Afghanistan, spent 34 days on the road from the Golden Gate Bridge to One World Trade Center to raise money for the Warrior Built Foundation and awareness about PTSD among veterans. “I read about groups that take you out and follow you in a bus that carries your gear,” said Faulkner, 25. “I figured it would be better to make a story of my own. “People stop and talk to me and…

Emerson Pet Shop To Stay Open With Third-Party Monitor HACKENSACK, N.J. — An Emerson pet shop that lost its license will remain open with the oversight of an independent third-party monitor, a judge in Hackensack ruled on Friday. Borough officials have had the ability to close Vincent LoSacco's Just Pups store themselves but haven't done so, Superior Court Judge Lisa Perez Friscia said in denying borough officials' request for a temporary injunction. “Emerson as a borough has the ability to self-govern and to take steps and measures on its own,” Perez Friscia said. “It has not done that in the last four months. "They have not slated a cou…

Mike Monaco Returns To Restaurant Scene in Hackensack HACKENSACK, N.J. — Mike Monaco got an offer he couldn’t refuse when he was asked to run the newly open Picco Tavern on Prospect Avenue, between the two Excelsiors. For one thing, 20,000 people live on the street, which is lined with high-rises. For another, the place was once home to The Restaurant, a noted dining destination. “It’s a spectacular facility,” said Monaco, 59, a Cliffside Park native. But Picco, which boasts a dining room, bar and piano lounge, catering facility, and upscale retail deli, also signals a return to Monaco’s glory days. As a young man, Monaco apprenticed with a…

The place has the feel of a neighborhood mom-and-pop, Peterson said, which …
