Mahwah Horse Rescue Raising Funds To Continue Mission MAHWAH, N.J. — Golden Star, a 41-year-old Palomino, arrived at the Bergen County Horse Rescue in Mahwah Tuesday, somewhat undernourished, with a dull coat, and a longing look in his eye. He walked up to a pair of miniature horses grazing but they did not engage him. “He wants friends,” said Betty Michelmore of Demarest, who has known “Goldy” for a decade. He used to be friends with her horse, who has since passed on, at Happel’s Barn in Rockleigh. Three years ago, Goldy’s owner shipped him to New York State where his upkeep was less expensive. Michelmore visited him there. For the past thr…

Minor Independence Day Quake Rattles North Passaic BUTLER, N.J. — A 1.1-magnitude earthquake in the Butler area jolted some North Jersey towns a little after midnight Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). “It’s normal for this type of earthquake, which is really small, to be felt in the immediate area, especially in Pompton Lakes, Butler, and Kinnelon,” said USGS Seismologist Jessica Turner. The rattling also was felt in Bloomingdale, according to the Associated Press. Because the quake hit around midnight, Turner said, people who were still awake and probably reading or watching TV were likely to feel it. At busier part…

Mahwah Forum Raises Consciousness On Pilgrim Pipeline MAHWAH, N.J. — Thirty people turned out at the Mahwah Public Library Wednesday to hear the thoughts and plans of two groups opposed to the Pilgrim Pipeline. One is Coalition Against Pilgrim Pipeline, a grassroots group. The other is the New Jersey Highlands Coalition, an environmental group. The proposed project calls for dual 178-mile pipelines that would carry millions of gallons of crude oil daily from Albany to a refinery in Linden and then refined products back north.
