Stillbirth Dads Meet In Park Ridge To Help Each Other PARK RIDGE, N.J. — Every month, a group of fathers who lost their infants before, during, or after birth gather in Park Ridge to talk. The Men’s Perinatal Bereavement Support Group is run by Valley Hospital Social Worker Trudy Heerema. It gives the men a chance to process their emotions after the loss. The opportunity, they say, is rare. “This is a safe haven for all of us,” said Adam Yoskowitz of Mahwah, who started the group with another bereaved father, Canaan Himmelbaum of Scotch Plains. The Hudson Shea Foundation, founded by Yoskowitz and his wife and named after their son, has funde…

Bergen Mental Health Leader: 7,000 Could Lose Services DUMONT, N.J. — If the state changes how it funds community mental health services, 7,000 Bergen County patients dependent on medication could be left in the lurch, according to Vicky Sidrow, president/CEO of Vantage Health System. There are four community mental health centers in the county that provide outpatient services to 30,000 people, said Sidrow. Her agency provides such services in Dumont and Englewood. “We figured out that, collectively, we’d lose around $8 million,” Sidrow said. Among them, the four agencies serve 6,000 to 7,000 people on medication for depression, anxiety, schi…
Ridgewood Voters Reject Parking Deck Ridgewood Voters Reject Parking Deck
Ridgewood Voters Reject Parking Deck RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — Ridgewood voters overwhelmingly defeated a proposed $11.5 million Hudson Street parking deck at the polls Tuesday. A total of 2,671 voters rejected the plan, while 1,425 supported it. The results mean an $11.5 million bonding ordinance passed by the Village Council last March will die and a new council will decide the issue. On July 1, three newly elected people — Ramon Hache, Jeff Voigt, and Bernadette Coghlan-Walsh — will be sworn to office on the five-member Village Council. “We thank the voters for trusting the incoming council and letting them take care of our parking …
A Divided Ridgewood To Vote On Parking Deck Tuesday A Divided Ridgewood To Vote On Parking Deck Tuesday
A Divided Ridgewood To Vote On Parking Deck Tuesday RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — Ridgewood residents will vote no or yes Tuesday on whether to spend $11.5 million on a Hudson Street parking deck. The choice seems simple. It isn’t. In recent days, mailings, countermailings, and even a church bulletin are weighing in on exactly what a “yes” vote means. “It is very clear that there is a dearth of parking available in the village,” Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld said. “This situation is particularly acute closer to the train station between Franklin and Hudson/Dayton and Broad/Oak.” Time and again, studies have shown there is a strong need for parking…

Ridgewood Program Serves Up $4 Meals In Seven Towns RIDGEWOOD, N.J. – Two meals in hand, Pat Kehrberger of Waldwick rings the bell at Catherine’s house in Allendale. “She’s one of my favorites,” says Kehrberger, a retired environmental engineer and volunteer for the Ridgewood-based Community Meals, Inc. “Come in!” chirps Catherine, ready and waiting at her kitchen table around noontime. The two catch up for a few minutes. Catherine asks that the meals be left next to the sink. Kehrberger is one of a small army of volunteers who assemble, package, and label hundreds of meals at Christ Church in Ridgewood every weekday. Each meal is specifi…

Norwood Girl Places 10th In Nation In Math Contest NORWOOD, N.J. – Ella Guzman, a fourth-grader at Norwood Public School, ranked tenth in the nation at her grade level in the 2016 Math Kangaroo in USA competition. The 10-year-old was among the winners recently recognized at Bergen County Academies in Hackensack. Though she loves doing math because it’s challenging, Guzman does not envision a numbers-driven life for herself. “I would like to be either a writer," she said, "or an ornithologist, a scientist who studies birds."
Ridgewood Voters To Decide Parking Deck's Future Ridgewood Voters To Decide Parking Deck's Future
Ridgewood Voters To Decide Parking Deck's Future RIDGEWOOD, N.J. – Ridgewood voters on Tuesday have a chance to support or reject spending $11.5 million on a parking garage at Hudson and South Broad streets. “There is absolutely no language in the referendum – or in the ordinance it refers to – about the size or shape or look of the proposed parking deck,” the village says on its website. “This referendum is only about cost and location.” Ridgewood voters went to the polls on the issue last November, when 65 percent supported the financing and building of the parking deck. That referendum wasn't binding. The results of Tuesday’s referend…

Dozens Gather In Allendale To Honor Orlando Victims ALLENDALE, N.J. – Beth Whittam simply had to attend a candlelight vigil at Trinity Episcopal Church in Allendale Tuesday night for the victims of Sunday’s Orlando massacre. “I wanted to stand in solidarity with other people against the darkness,” said Whittam, an Allendale resident and parishioner at Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River. “I felt like I wanted to pray specifically for each individual who died,” she added. “Each was a person in someone’s family.” Some 35 people from different congregations attended the vigil, led by the leaders of six faith communities in Allenda…
