Midland Park Health Shop Owner Celebrates Anniversary, Children's Book MIDLAND PARK, N.J. – At A&A Health Food Center in Midland Park, Mike Puzino helps customers find their supplements. “Twenty percent off,” he says. “It’s our 45th anniversary sale, all month.” Three years ago, Puzino and his wife, Jeannie Lamboy-Puzino, bought the shop from her parents, Adrian and Ilse Lamboy of Paramus, who founded it in 1971. Those were the early days of alternative health consciousness, fueled in part by nutrition advice radio shows, such asWOR-AM’s “Design for Living” featuring Carlton Fredericks. Today the role of the health store in the community is consumer edu…
Diabetic River Vale Woman Bonds With Special Dog Diabetic River Vale Woman Bonds With Special Dog
Diabetic River Vale Woman Bonds With Special Dog RIVER VALE, N.J. – For Brenda Kerr of River Vale, Jax is as much a lifeline as a best friend. Kerr has Type 1 diabetes.  Jax, a 3-month-old Golden Retriever, is her alert dog. The two even share the same February birth date. “To live with Type 1 diabetes is to always play a guessing game,” said Kerr, 24. “How much insulin should I take? It depends on what I eat, if I’m sick, if I have my period, if I’m under stress.” Kerr takes seven to eight insulin shots a day. Depending on what’s happening at the time, she’ll up her dosage. Keeping just the right sugar levels is key. A patient can s…

Drones Research Taking Off At Paramus College PARAMUS, N.J. – The STEM Block House at Bergen Community College was electric with energy Wednesday as a team of students talked over their new SCAREDRONE project. This type of drone is mounted and stored in its own little tower on an agricultural field. “The drone sits on a landing platform atop a recharging pad until its motion-detecting software activates,” said Abreham Minday of Lyndhurst. “Once it senses any creatures or critters, its speaker emits the sounds of predatory birds.” Then the aircraft takes off to scare plant-eating birds and other animals away from the fields, adds Robe…

Most likely, she added, the report will be made public next week, per state law. The union is discussing its options to prepare for the meeting with the membership, according to Grasso. “We’ll explain what parts we like, what parts we don’t,” she said. “We will, at that point, have our decision …

Emerson Schools Shut Down 8 Water Sources EMERSON, N.J. – Eleven water sources at two borough schools have levels of lead that exceed health standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, officials said. Gatens. Additionally, high levels were found in two samples at the Patrick M. Villano School and at a faucet at a concession stand at Memorial Elementary School. Paramus Trainer Keeps Things Heavy In Gym, Light On Bergen Facebook Page PARAMUS, N.J. – Janna Vorontsova of Paramus could hardly believe it when she was kicked off a Facebook page because she wasn’t a resident of Ridgewood. So she started a page for residents in all towns: We Live In Bergen County. “A lot of groups are segregated by towns and don’t allow other people to come in,” said Vorontsova, a personal trainer. “I like inclusion so I created a page that’s for all the towns, all the people.” She likes to keep the content light — no accidents, no police reports. There are other rules, though. No selling of personal items and no local business ads — except …
Dumont Ambulance Family Looking To Grow Dumont Ambulance Family Looking To Grow
Dumont Ambulance Family Looking To Grow DUMONT, N.J. – At a time when many ambulance corps are looking for members, the Dumont Volunteer Ambulance Corps is thriving. It’s got 39 members, including its youth squad—a tradition since the 1960s. “The more, the merrier,” said Capt. David Oldewurtel of Cresskill. “Right now we’re doing 12-hour duty shifts. If we had close to 50 members, we could knock that down to six hours. “Then the weekends would be 12 hours instead of 24,” he added. “That would make it more attractive to people to volunteer.” Things weren’t always as good as they are now. In 2004, the corps hit an all-time low m…
